The Team

Irving L. Weissman, M.D.

Principal Investigator

Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor of Clinical Investigation in Cancer Research, Professor of Pathology and Developmental Biology

Teja Naik, M.S.

Lab Manager

Anna Eastman, Ph.D.

Instructor

Anna’s research focuses on the baseline characteristics of postnatal human neural stem cells, and their role in brain diseases such as malignancy and cortical overgrowth-associated epilepsy.

Tom Levy, Ph.D.

Research Scientist (Instructor)

Studies reproductive biology across species at the germline stem cell level, focusing on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie germline stem cell fitness and aging.

Victoria Mascetti, Ph.D.

Research Scientist

Dr. Victoria Mascetti is a stem cell and developmental biologist at Stanford investigating the embryonic origins and functional specification of hematopoietic stem cells. Her research integrates embryo culture, transplantation, immunophenotyping and single-cell transcriptomics to define the developmental origins of stem cell populations.

Jinyi Xiang, M.D., Ph.D.

Instructor

Jinyi studies hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) fate and the bone marrow niche, with a particular interest in how the native three-dimensional microenvironment regulates HSC behavior in vivo. His research integrates HSC fate mapping with advanced 3D spatial omics and imaging approaches to define the cellular and molecular interactions that regulate HSC maintenance, regeneration, and disease-associated changes.

Erica Dhuey, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Daniel Dan Liu, M.D., Ph.D.

Resident Physician

Andrew Burden

Ph.D. Candidate

Andrew Burden is a PhD candidate at Stanford, co-mentored by Irving Weissman and Agnieszka Czechowicz, studying the epigenetics of long-term hematopoietic stem cells (LT-HSCs). His work maps how chromatin accessibility and histone modifications change as blood stem cells lose self-renewal capacity with implications for future HSC regeneration, transplantation, and clonal hematopoiesis research.

Omair Khan, M.D.

Graduate Student

Suyash Raj

Ph.D. Candidate

Samrat Thapa, M.S.

Medical Student

Studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders using human iPSC-derived neural stem cells, CRISPR genome editing, and single-cell genomics. Focuses on how dysregulation of the mTOR pathway and other signaling mechanisms alters neural stem cell behavior, with the goal of identifying therapeutic targets for conditions such as focal cortical dysplasia and hemimegalencephaly.

Aaron McCarty

Laboratory Services Manager

Aaron received his BS in Animal Science & Aquaculture from University of California, Davis and went on to cut his teeth in molecular biology and transgenic mouse production and management at several Bay Area biotech companies. In 2008, he joined the Stanford Veterinary Services Center before taking a position in Dr. Irving Weissman’s lab in 2012. He now splits his time as Lab Manager for Dr. Kyle Loh’s lab and Colony/in vivo resources manager for the Weissman lab.

Benjamin F. Ohene-Gambill

Life Science Research Professional II

Benjamin maintains and manages the scRNA-seq pipeline in the lab, and is working to develop a breast cancer detection assay for qPCR and ddPCR in preparation for a future clinical trial.

Charlene Wang

Life Science Research Professional II

Charlene is a Transgenic Animal Production Technician skilled in transgenic and knockout animal production through methods including microinjection and ES cell injection. Charlene also conducts sperm/embryo cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Overall, Charlene is experienced in managing and maintaining animal colonies to support vital scientific research.

Nicole Womack

Life Science Research Professional II

Laura Almeida

Life Science Research Professional 1

Jeremy Callaway

REACH Postbaccalaureate Scholar/LSRP I

Jeremy works on isolating a specific type of neural stem cell from the developing human brain. These cells are thought to give rise to the ependymal cells that line the brain’s ventricles, but have not yet been purified from human tissue. Jeremy employs cell-surface markers and cell sorting to extract them and track their differentiation. Jeremy strives to contribute to the cell biology that will make the first FDA-approved stem cell therapy for a neurological disease possible.

Kameron Peyton, M.B.A., M.S., M.S.

REACH Postbaccalaureate Scholar/LSRP I

Kameron is investigating HSC surface biology and microenvironmental dynamics to enable targeted, non-genotoxic antibody conditioning regimens. Kameron works alongside Andrew Burden to characterize surface candidates that can potentially displace toxic systemic treatments in favor of precision biologic conditioning for cell therapies.
